Mary Polson has served as the UCAN Program Coordinator since July 2011. Prior to that, she served on the UCAN Board of Directors. She was a member of the Transition Team responsible for restructuring and rebranding the original Urbandale Community Action Council.
Mary has been a resident of Urbandale since 1989. Under strong protest, she left her Des Moines Beaverdale residence when she married Max Polson (deceased 2006). However, Mary immediately fell in love with the Urbandale community, the small town feel, the neighbors helping neighbors.
In 1996, Mary was appointed to the Urbandale Parks & Recreation Commission, followed by an appointment to Urbandale Plan and Zoning in 2000. In addition, Mary served on the Action Council Board from 2000 to 2003 and was a graduate of the inaugural Leadership Urbandale in 2000.
In 2003, Mary ran for the Urbandale City Council, where she held a position for the next eight years, representing the City on the Metropolitan Advisory Council (MAC) and Bravo.
Mary was employed by Bankers Life – now known as Principal Financial Group for 26 years, retiring in 2004. She currently lives in north Urbandale with her significant other, Ken Neal and their two dogs, Hana and Lou.
