Ruth Hellyer is a Caring Corps volunteer with a focus on education. “Education is the answer to a lot of our big problems” says Ruth. She was a Middle School Science teacher in the Des Moines School District for a combined 23 years. Ruth says she has always wanted to be a teacher – starting in kindergarten when she played “school” with her friends.

Ruth returned this fall to help with the 4th year of the UCAN Achieve program at the Middle School. She works with individual students or small groups, typically helping with a math or science problem. She volunteers one day a week for 3 ½ hours in an Olmsted Elementary School 1st grade classroom. There she works one-to-one with students on specific tasks provided by the teacher. Periodically, Ruth can be found in the Family Consumer Science class at the High School, helping whenever the class is working on a sewing project. Ruth is active in her church and their Women’s Circle working on sewing projects and other collections.

Ruth has been an active volunteer in the past. She have volunteered at the Botanical Center, the Science Center and Meredith Middle School. Last year she was a weekly volunteer in the Whiz Kids program at Aldersgate Methodist Church. Due to a family health issue, Ruth has cut back on volunteer hours to spend more time with her family.
Ruth has lived in Urbandale for 8 years, moving here from the Beaverdale neighborhood in Des Moines. She has one daughter , residing in Urbandale, and three grandchildren, all in Urbandale schools.
